If there's one thing Hollywood loves more than a good comeback, it's a remake of an '80s movie. The past few years have witnessed remakes of Dirty Dancing, Footloose, and Karate Kid to name but a few. Along with these are a whole host of remake rumors (Mannequin! Gremlins! Teen Witch! The Blue Lagoon! They're even remaking Garbage Pail Kids!) that have been floating around the ether.
Although PAPERMAG has been incredibly busy casting other imaginary projects lately -- we spent hours scrutinizing over whom to pick for the next season of Dancing With the Stars -- we've found time to set our sights on what '80s movies are due for a remake and whom we'd like to see in them. Our criteria was fairly straightforward: we wanted to look at beloved eighties movies that veer on the "cult classic" or "teen flick" side, line rather than masterpieces (we'd never touch The Breakfast Club or Ferris Bueller's Day Off, by contrast).
As always, feel free to agree with our choices or say they're utter b.s. in the comments below.
Gremlins (1984)
Original: Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates
Our Re-make: Penn Badgley and Lea Michele
How likely is a remake?: There have been rumors that Director Joe Dante was gearing up for a remake but as far as we know, nothing's materialized.
Uncle Buck (1989)
Original: John Candy
Our Re-make: Zack Galifianakis
How likely is a remake?: A few years ago sources said actor Dan Fogler might take Candy's role in a possible remake but it appears that was just hearsay.
Just One of the Guys (1985)
Original: Joyce Hyser
Our Re-make: Kristen Stewart
How likely is a remake?: This flick seems to have been spared remake rumors...for now.
The Lost Boys (1987)
Original: Corey Haim (Sam), Kiefer Sutherland (David), Jamie Gertz (Star) and Corey Feldman (Edgar Frog)
Our Re-make: Nick Jonas (Sam), Ryan Gosling (David), Camilla Belle (Star) and Ezra Miller (Edgar Frog)
How likely is a remake?: There doesn't appear to be any talk of a remake. (Noted Lost Boys fans Kate and Laure Mulleavy of Rodarte can rest easy for now.)
Weird Science (1985)
Original: Anthony Michael Hall (Gary), Kelly LeBrock (Lisa) and Ilan Mitchell-Smith (Wyatt)
Our Re-make: Michael Cera (Gary), Karlie Kloss (Lisa) and Josh Hutcherson (Wyatt)
How likely is a remake?: Aside from Robert Downey Jr. (who had a part in the original), it doesn't seem like anyone is eager for a remake though the flick was turned into a USA Network show that ran from 1994-1997.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
Original: Alex Winter (Bill), Keanu Reeves (Ted) and George Carlin (Rufus)
Our Re-make: Jonah Hill (Bill), Josh Peck (Ted) and Louis C.K. (Rufus)
How likely is a remake?: First Keanu Reeves indicated to a red carpet reporter that a sequel might be in the works and then the blogosphere was briefly humming with gossip that Justin Bieber might star in the production. We're can't belieb it (har har).
Teen Witch (1989)
Original: Robyn Lively
Our Re-make: Heather Morrison
How likely is a remake?: There have been rumors for a few years that a re-make is already in the works starring Ashley Tisdale.
Valley Girl (1983)
Original: Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman
Our Re-make: Robert Pattinson and Emma Roberts
How likely is a remake?: A musical re-make is allegedly in the works.
Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985)
Original: Sarah Jessica Parker, Helen Hunt and Shannen Doherty
Our Re-make: Dakota Fanning, Chloe Moretz and Sarah Hyland, as those three ladies, respectively
How likely is a remake?: There was chatter in 2008 that a re-make would come out featuring Miley Cyrus but so far there's yet to be any developments.
The Blue Lagoon (1980)
Original: Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins
Our Re-make: Hailee Steinfeld and Chord Overstreet
How likely is a remake?: A mere couple of days ago, news came out that two unknowns would star in a remake of the island romance.
