Yesterday London department store Selfridges opened the genderless pop-up concept store "Agender," a single retail space for both men and women, without any brand messaging or display designs that might suggest an intended gender for any of the clothing. Agender spans three floors of the department store, features mannequins that aren't modeled after a discernible sex, and includes designs from Body Map, Nicopanda, Rad Hourani, and VFiles among others. Perhaps most radically, the space's designer Faye Toogood placed all of the clothes in white encasings, with only written descriptions of the items on tags and a small clear panel in front to give the shopper an idea of what's inside.
As part of the launch, Selfridges commissioned this captivating, single-shot video by directors Kathryn Ferguson and Alex Turvey following transgender actress and performance artist Hari Nef as she navigates her way through an array of voguers and dancers to an original song by Dev Hynes and Neneh Cherry.
