A '90s Hip-Hop Golden Globes Playlist

Hesta Prynn A.jpegIn this weekly column, MC/DJ Hesta Prynn pairs pop culture stories with an original playlist.

This Sunday is the Golden Globes and the category I'm most excited for is Best Television Series (Drama). The characters on these shows are ferocious badasses who don't take shit from anybody. Carrie Matheson basically runs the C.I.A. and Walter White is so gangsta it hurts. It wasn't hard to imagine each of these series with a '90s hip-hop theme song. Pour a little out for Abu Nazir, here are your new opening credits.

Breaking Bad: Biggie Smalls, "10 Crack Commandments"

When you're in the "empire business" you'd do well to heed Biggie's warnings, particularly rule number seven: "This rule is so underrated -- Keep your family and business completely separated." (Jesse Pinkman: BITCH!)

Downton Abbey Season 2: Wu-Tang Clan, "C.R.E.A.M."

The ringing of a bell, the dusting of a chandelier. Yes, the sun is rising over Downton Abbey just as it rises over the streets of Shaolin. The faces are different but the game remains the same. Get the money, Mary.

Homeland: Method Man feat. Mary J Blige, "You're All I Need to Get By"

The chorus says, "Lie together, cry together, I swear to God I hope we fuckin' die together." It's literally the Carrie Matheson theme song.

Boardwalk Empire: Snoop Doggy Dogg, "Gin & Juice"

How is "Nucky" not a euphemism for something at this point? (Also whose Phantom of the Opera mask is more fierce, Richard Harrow or this dude from the St Lunatics?)

The Newsroom: KRS One, "MCs Act Like They Don't Know"

The Newsroom is to KRS One as The Real Housewives is to 2Chainz. You know that this show is "critically acclaimed" and "important" and "smart" but ... maybe you find it "uneventful" "one note" or "kinda boring."
