Wanda Jackson on Her New Album and Jumpin' Jack White

Wanda-2-Credit-Joshua-Wilkins.jpg
All hail rock 'n' roll royalty! On her 31st rippin' record, Unfinished Business (out this month), the legendary Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson, delivers her gravelly, yet sultry croon over crackling-hot old-school rock. The new Justin Townes Earle-produced album follows her 2011 LP, The Party Ain't Over, a sensational dose of revved-up rockabilly produced by one of her greatest admirers, Jack White. "Oh, Jack was like a jumpin' bean in the studio!" Jackson says. "And working with Justin was like just slippin' into a comfortable pair of shoes."

Jackson burst onto the scene in the mid-'50s as Elvis Presley's opening act. (She even had a brief fling with the King, but has been married to Wendell Goodman, a former IBM programmer, since 1961.) "Elvis talked to my daddy about me singing rock 'n' roll songs. I'd done country all my life, but Elvis convinced dad to let me switch."

Tonight, October 12, Jackson will play new and greatest hits at New York's Highline Ballroom, and one song that's particularly meaningful. "I wrote a ballad called 'Right or Wrong,' about the time I met Wendell. I like to see the sweet change that comes over the audience when they hear that song. If they're with their date or husband, they snuggle up or hold hands. It's a beautiful thing."

Welcome to our Friday GIF roundup, featuring a curated list of this week's most important, amusing and/or newsy GIFs and GIF sets by Mike Hayes of BuzzFeed and GIFHound.

Joe Biden is eminently GIFable. He reinforced this last night. This week's best-of is dedicated to the best of Joe from last night -- with a few very strange Paul Ryan things interspersed.

Mars Attacks Gets a 50th Anniversary Collection

When the Topps chewing gum company decided to broaden their baseball card fanbase in 1962, they decided to go intergalactic. Sadly, their "Mars Attacks" series was short-lived, after some parents complained that the cards were too violent.  Naturally the 55 cards in the initial run became collectors items -- supposedly a mint-condition set is worth $25,000 -- and now Abrams/ComicArts has published a cool book of reproductions of all the cards and some additional sketches, plus the complete series of sequel cards that came out in 1994. (Images from Tim Burton's 1996 film adaptation aren't included.) Of course earthlings got the last laugh in the ongoing worry about an alien invasion: we invaded Mars. Take a look below, but don't show your mom and dad.

The xx just dropped this clip for "Chained," another track from their second album, Coexist.  Directed by Young Replicant, the video looks like it was shot in the world's largest swimming pool and, at first, it seems like singer/guitarist Romy is drowning. Soon enough, all three are in the pool and we get a happy -- though that's not the first adjective that comes to mind with this group -- ending.  They'll be playing in da Bronx at the Paradise Theater on October 26th and October 28th.

Your Guide to CMJ 2012

Screen shot 2012-10-16 at 12.43.41 PM.pngAh, CMJ. That wonderful time of year when people shell out over $500 on a "badge" that will give them access to a head-ache inducing line-up of shows, most of which they probably won't even be able to go to because a) it's CMJ and b) it's CMJ? Paper's here to help with our guide on what to check out over the next few days. Check out the full, official schedule here.

heliotropes.pngHeliotropes

Tuesday, Oct 16th

If You Have a Badge: OFF!, the supergroup of aging punk dudes fronted by Keith Morris, will be playing at Terminal 5 or check out folk rockers The Mountain Goats (they are, unfortunately, not a band of mountain goats) at The Bowery Ballroom.

If You Don't Have a Badge: See the Greenpointers x Permanent Wave x Campers Rule CMJ Showcase at Public Assembly featuring some psychedelic rock bands like HeliotropesLeda, Starlight Girls, and more.

Totally Not Worth It (They'll Be Back In a Few Weeks!): The crazy loud, post-punk band Metz is playing tonight at the Cameo Gallery, but they're going to be playing shows at Mercury Lounge and the Knitting Factory this time next month. See them then, without the long lines and crowds.

The Party Scene: Check out Oh My Rockness' 8th birthday party at Cameo Gallery showcasing 80's-esque electro-pop act Chrome Canyon along with dream pop acts Mood Rings and Heavenly Beat.

localnatives.jpegLocal Natives

Wednesday, Oct 17th

If You Have a Badge: Local Natives are headlining the Champion showcase tonight at the Bowery Ballroom, playing their first show since 2011. They'll be playing material off their latest album, set to drop in early 2013, and have flown all the way from sunny California just for CMJ. This may be a crowded event, but if you really love Local Natives with every inch of your bod, this is worth seeing.

If You Don't Have a Badge But Are Willing to Wait in a Long-Ass Line: The vampy 60's girl group-throwbacks, Dum Dum Girls, are playing at Glasslands Gallery as part of the Stereogum & PopGun showcase. Flying Lotus and Death Grips are also playing this night for free at Le Poisson Rouge.

The Party Scene: Check out those weirdo French-Canadian kids Braids along with garage-pop band Maus Haus and bunch of other indie groups at the free Tell All Your Friends party at Pianos.

king_tuff2.jpgKing Tuff.

Thursday, Oct 18th

If You Have a Badge: See LA-based garage-rock royalty King Tuff be a bad, bad, bad thing as part of the Sub Pop CMJ showcase. The always lovely Eleanor Friedberger will also be gracing the stage at Mercury Lounge.

If You Don't Have a Badge: Gorilla v. Bear and Forest Family are hosting an unofficial CMJ dance party at 285 Kent featuring super indie acts like Kilo Kish, TOPs, Diana, and more.

Totally Not Worth It (See Her The Next Night!): Popstress Sky Ferreira at Bowery Ballroom. For $5, just catch her Friday night at the CMJ Showcase at Santos House Party. Ferreira's latest album Ghost (which is set to be more of a departure from her past electro-pop fare) drops Tuesday.

The Party Scene: Rad indie label Mexican Summer is throwing a "Downton to Get Down" party at 286 Bowery with a DJ set by Airbird a performance from the Atlanta-based band Mood Rings, and another live special guest TBA.

Friday, Oct 19th

If You Have a Badge: Catch young rapper Angel Haze at the Mass Appeal Showcase. We predicted this summer that this self-assured rapper ("Shit I was probably god in my first life," she claims on her track "Jungle Fever") was gonna be big.

If You Don't Have a Badge: Check out the free Pitchfork showcase sponsored by Topman at Villain to see Joey BadA$$, DIIV, Death Grips and more. Make sure you pick up tickets at the Soho Topman on Wednesday and Thursday to get in!

The Party Scene: Head to Le Bain at The Standard for the Urban Outfitters + Making Time Party featuring live performances from Tanlines and Blood Diamonds as well as a DJ set from Dave P. and Sammy Slice.

ghostface-killah1.jpegGhostface Killah

Saturday, Oct 20th

If You Don't Have a Badge: See Chromeo and ?uestlove presented by Myspace at the Tribeca Grand Hotel.

Totally Not Worth It (LOL, Like You'd Even Get In): Kimbra playing Webster Hall at 12:00 am. As an official "highlight" of CMJ, the chances of you waiting in line outside for a century are pretty high. She didn't have to cut you off...

The Party Scene: Check out the Converse Rubber Tracks Live Celebrates: Fool's Gold Five Year Anniversary party featuring Ghostface Killah, A-Trak, Flosstradamus and more.

Two's A Trend: Cuckoo Web Series

$

chrissie_hunx_webseriesthumb.jpgYesterday we shared a little teaser for Club Chrissie -- a new "part Wayne's World, part Pee-wee's Playhouse" web series from Sophomore designer and DJ Chrissie Miller -- and today we learned our L.A. friends Hunx (a.k.a. Seth Bogart of Hunx and His Punx and Gravy Train!!!!) and Brande Bytheway have come up with an online show of their own: Hollywood Nailz. (And, by the by, check 'em out with all their cuckoo bananas pals in this month's issue of PAPER.) But even though we're officially filing these projects under "Two's a Trend," that doesn't mean they're as similar as, say, Santigold and Brady Corbet's shared love of Life As We Know It. Whereas CC seems to be a DIY talk show-meets-cool kid crafting hour, Hunx and Brande's variety-cum-sketch show reminds us of a cross between a John Waters flick and The Gong Show. To get a better sense of what we mean, check out the teaser below featuring characters in outlandish pancake makeup that would make Cindy Sherman blush, an outer space-themed phone sex hotline and a sassy judge/bartender named Judge Barry (along with cameos by King Khan, Grass Widow, Nobunny and more).

It looks mental and we love it already.

Addendum: YACHT is also developing their own "comedy show" for Amazon based on the "awkward, banal (and sometimes even degrading) realities inherent to playing in a band," according to a press release.  Maybe we should revise this to "Three's a Trend"?

Yes, Lady Gaga Gets Eaten By a Lion in the New Die Antwoord Video

$

0

You can always depend on a Die Antwoord video for trippy visuals and some sort of   controversial and/or NSFW content (see here), and oh, does the group's newest clip for the thumping "Fatty Boom Boom" deliver. The group lets loose with their signature mixtures of style, "zef" antics, and general sense of hooliganism, with full body makeup, vibrant costuming and quick cuts. Between the rhythmic explosions of color, sound, and dance, there are so many insane moments to cover that it's hard to pick where to begin. Fist, there's the blatant mocking of Western misconceptions of South Africa, sent up in a tour through the streets that indulges a store keeper's panther in lieu of a pitbull, and a ruler named "The Lion King" (whose literally a lion). And then there's a Lady Gaga male impersonator, meat dress and all, who humorously comments on the group's "freaky fashion" and wonders if she could get them to open for her (referencing Antwood's rejection of Gaga's invitation to join her tour), before being carjacked by a street gang, giving birth to a cockroach, and getting devoured by the aforementioned lion. In that order. Even without throwing in Yo-landi in full black face (black body?) and you already have enough fodder for a big bang likely to piss off a bunch of people, which the group always seems more than happy to do.

In-N-Out Burger Opened A Pop-Up Shop In London Today

$

Screen shot 2012-10-16 at 5.07.24 PM.pngTrue story: we ate a burger for lunch today and though it was a real treat (not to mention a nice change from our usual brown bagged turkey sandwiches and watery deli salads), we're sure it paled in comparison to what folks in Hendon, England enjoyed. Cult California chain In-N-Out Burger opened a pop-up shop in the London suburb earlier this afternoon and, for reasons still unknown, selected a seemingly obscure restaurant in that town to play host. After tricking the place out with signs, menus, and American burger cooks, Brits were able to get the full animal style double-double burger experience (though, sadly, no fries) for a fleeting four hours. And, as for whether the grub felt like the real deal, blogger Burger Addict effused, "The real test to see if the quality had transfered [sic] across the pond...Booya it had. It was as I remembered it State-side, incredibly flavoursome and juicy with the kick of mustard due to the animal style cooking."

Our interests piqued, we contacted In-N-Out for more info about the pop-up and learned that the company -- which famously hasn't expanded much beyond the West Coast -- has no plans to make Cali-style gluttony (including the distinctly L.A. concoction of carb-free iceberg lettuce wrapped double cheeseburgers with animal sauce) a reality for our friends across the pond. In a response to our questions, the company's VP said the following:

We have done events like this before in other countries and they are just one part of our efforts to promote and expand our brand as well as determine the best way to continue reaching out to customers around the world.  These events also help to protect the In-N-Out Burger brand in important markets like London.  We do not have any immediate plans to open permanent restaurants there but these special events will help us make future decisions.
Apparently the chain has opened pop-ups in places like Singapore though no word on what their next destination will be. A strip-mall in Kyrgyzstan, perhaps?

Poesy Power

$
0

celmence-p-head.jpgClémence Poésy is nervous. The 30-year-old actress, who hasn't done live theater in eight years, makes her Broadway debut this fall in Cyrano de Bergerac -- and the production isn't in her native tongue. "I'm terrified," she admits. In speaking to her further, however, one gets the feeling she'll manage. French by birth, Poésy speaks impeccable English (with a nonspecific British accent) and communicates a voluble enthusiasm for the play. She says she grew up with Edmond Rostand's 1897 story -- apparently in France, Cyrano is something of a point of national pride -- and so the pre-show jitters have more to do with doing the role justice. Poésy stars as Roxane, the objet d'amour of Cyrano (Douglas Hodge), and this version of the show, like the original, is in verse, with rhyming couplets. "It's a play that's about the power of words, and how beautiful words can be, and the power of poetry, and the power of wit," Poésy explains.

Though charming and self-effacing, Poésy is a seasoned performer. In the U.S., she's perhaps best known as Triwizard competitor Fleur Delacour in the Harry Potter franchise, but also for her work opposite James Franco in 127 Hours and as Chuck Bass' girlfriend on Gossip Girl. She grew up in Paris as the daughter of French actor-writer-director Étienne Guichard (Poésy is her mother's maiden name), and began acting as a child. These days she calls both London and Paris home, where she makes regular appearances at their Fashion Weeks. She has dabbled in modeling -- for Chloé, G-Star and the Gap -- but doesn't see that as a career. ("I'm not a model," she says. "[I'm asked] when they need someone they feel like people can identify with...") She does prefer a few labels, though. As with her roles, the designers she favors create immersive experiences. "I love Rodarte," she says. "They invent these worlds through their clothes. It's like wearable art."

Poésy Power

celmence-p-head.jpgClémence Poésy is nervous.
