New York

The manic, frenzied sounds of neo-folk Cult of Youth will be celebrated tonight at a party for the release of their second album Love Will Prevail at Public Assembly. The group, which has been accumulating attention since it's self-titled debut in 2011, unveils a new installment of their engaging, energetic sound, this time with a few dusty sunset twists.  [Flavorpill]

Emerging beat maker Rustie just recently served his first legit live show in the UK, and is making a stop tonight  at Webster Hall before playing P.S. 1 tomorrow night. Catch the chance to experience this new dance enabler before he takes off.  [Flavorpill

Ira Sachs' new film Keep the Lights On was a huge hit at Sundance, and for good reason. The semi-autobiographical film--which follows an almost decade relationship between Erik, a filmmaker, and Paul, a closeted lawyer, as their union flourishes and then decomposes as the result of personal addictions--delivers both amazing performances and a deeply affecting punch. Catch it tonight at either, the Angelika Film Center or Chelsea Clearview. [TimeOut]

Chris Dorland, a master multimedia artist whose painted collages of pop culture images weave together both an affection for black humor and a study on the foibles of our day to day world, will be opening his new show "Permanent Vacation" at the Winkleman Gallery. [ARTCAT]

L.A.

Picture 3.png

The Fresh & Onlys, a shiny indie band hailing from San Fran, have long been play middle child to indie darlings like Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees, but not for much longer. Their new album, Long Slow Dance, has arrived with a rolling, surfy aesthetic and a polished sound.  They play The Echo tonight with another hometown act, the pop-punk trio Terry Malts [LA Weekly]

National copyright law-reforming, genre-hopping, decade-spanning art collective Negativland are having their first retrospective in the show, "Our Favorite Things," at La Luz Jesus Gallery. The group will be performing a piece live at the opening tonight   [ArtSlant]

Chicago

Seeing the Light: Intersections of Cinema & Poetry, as you might gather, is film series that examines the overlap of film and poetry. Three experimental films inspired by preexisting poetry, including the works of filmmakers James Broughton, Larry Jordan and Stan Brakhage and poets Charles Olson and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, screen tonight at the Poetry Foundation [Flavorpill]

Legendary American cartoonist and graphic novelist Chris Ware, whose work is like a Todd Solonz film via a comic strip, focuses on in the inner workings of everyday lives. Jill Sobule's "Supermodel" (A.K.A. the Song from Clueless) Is Our Oldie But Goodie Video of the Day

In honor of the start of New York Fashion Week (and the shitshow last night that is Fashion's Night Out), we're dedicating our Oldie But Goodie Friday video to Jill Sobule's "Supermodel" (a.k.a. that song from Clueless).  We'd always associated the track with Cher going through her boonanas virtual closet and actually had never seen the official clip before. In it, we see Sobule play a Tai-type -- hapless but with good makeover potential -- enduring taunts from her popular classmates in the school hallway. Before long, the singer enters a school modeling competition and then suddenly the video turns into a scene from Carrie.  Watch it above.

Van Neistat Is Making 'Golden Word' Swiss Army Knives at Red Bucket Films' Museum

Artist and filmmaker Van Neistat is producing bespoke Swiss Army Knives at Museum, Benny Safdie, Josh Safdie and Alex Kalman of Red Bucket Films' recently-opened reliquary located in an abandoned freight elevator off Cortlandt Alley.

The knives are meant to be special gifts for friends, family, and loved ones and can be made by making an appointment with Neistat. All the engraving is done by hand and rendered in liquid 18k gold leaf. Neistat will engrave the name of the giftee on one side of the knife and on the other he will engrave a "Golden Word," a poignant descriptor of the giftee that you and Neistat carefully choose together while reflecting on your relationship with your loved one. (You wouldn't be planning on secretly keeping the knife for yourself, right? Of course not.) Each knife is $206 and proceeds help support Museum.

Van Neistat's "The Golden Word" runs at Museum from September 19 to October 3rd.

Sia Tells Us How She Went From "Retirement" to Making Songs With Flo Rida and David Guetta

Screen shot 2012-09-07 at 12.36.27 PM.pngWe've long been fans of Sia over here at PAPER and, after not hearing from her in a little while, couldn't quite believe our ears when we first heard the singer's music blasting on Z100 in not one but two hit songs: mega-DJ David Guetta's "Titanium" and Flo Rida's "Wild Ones." Naturally, this got us wondering about how both of these major top 40 artists ended up with the indie-pop chanteuse. Fortunately, we ran into Sia at Honor's New York Fashion Week show yesterday and had all of these pressing inquiries answered. Read on to hear how Sia got connected with Guetta and Flo Rida, which of them she says is a great "hugger" and which is a "geek burger," and what she does when she hears her new jams on the radio.

Are you going to many shows this Fashion Week?

Not really. I don't really know anyone in the fashion industry, but I think I'm going to Alexander Wang, Chris Benz. I would like to be invited to more shows because I like to look at all of the fancy clothes that people wear -- it just totally spins me the fuck out and I love it.

Moving from fashion to music, how did you wind up working with Flo Rida and David Guetta?

I'd never met either of them and I was writing pop songs for other people. [Originally] I wrote "Titanium" for Alicia Keys. Then Mary J. Blige sang it but later [David Guetta] opted to put my demo vocal back on and I actually didn't know. They never got approval. It wasn't until press came out and he was talking about me that I asked my manager, "Why is he talking about me?" So he put me on the record without me knowing about it.

Music video for "Titanium" by David Guetta ft. Sia

How did you feel about that?

At the time, I was bummed because I was trying to disappear. I had just retired. With Flo [Rida], I wrote "Wild Ones" for Katy Perry but he kept me on there and she didn't even receive it.

Was it the same thing as with David Guetta  -- you wrote it and Flo Rida decided he preferred your demo vocals?

Yeah. He wanted me to do it but I said, "Okay, you can use it but don't use my name." And it came out that it still had my name in it. So now I'm in the contract that I don't do press, I'm not in the videos, I never perform them live. But [the songs] just keep buying me houses!

I'm actually super grateful. I was bummed at first about all of it but of course once you start making money on anything, it becomes increasingly easy to accept.

Music video for "Wild Ones" by Flo Rida ft. Sia

How did you start writing for David Guetta or Flo Rida in the first place?

It was my fantasy to become a pop writer and I got a new manager in America and I told him that and he listened. He started putting me in sessions for pop writing and that was one of the first ones I did. I wrote "Titanium" and recorded it in 42 minutes and the Flo Rida one took twelve. [Laughs]

Do you hang out with Flo Rida or David Guetta now?

No, I met Flo once. He's so nice and he's a really good hugger. I only met him the day I wrote [the song] and haven't met him since. And David, I didn't meet until months and months and months after the record had already come out and now I've met him maybe four times.  He's very sweet. He's like Big Bird from Sesame Street. He's the sweetest little geeky geek. He's very tall. He's a geek burger. I love him. They're both very sweet. But it's a weird scene to be in. I'm now writing for other artists and so I have a bunch of stuff coming out.

Anything you can share?

I have songs on four A-list artists' records that will be coming out in the next year or so.  I'm super excited. Lots of songs on their records -- at least three on each! Ahhh!

Can you tell us whose records?

Not yet, no. I can tell you but then it's not classy.

[Seatmate asks if one of them rhymes with "Flea-oncé?"]

That one I really cannot answer!

Is it weird to hear your songs at parties or on Top 40 radio?

Yeah. I listen to pop radio now for study and every once an hour, my song pops on. I have a new rule that every time it comes on, unless I'm on the highway, I pull over and have a dance party. It's a little self-congratulatory or self-masturbatory but I do feel very proud.

The Best and Worst of VMA Fashion

$
0
0
As per usual with awards shows of this ilk, the actual MTV Video Music Awards were a bit of a snooze, and the red carpet fashion was, well, the opposite of a snooze. Here below we give out our awards for everything from Worst Use of Gold Accessories to Best Crazy Matador Look.

slide_249048_1483526_free.jpeg
Best "Secretly Goth" Look: Miley Cyrus

After she bleached her hair and chopped it all off, Miley Cyrus has been a bit of a wild card fashion-wise. So of course we were sort of surprised to see Miley wearing this long, vampy, black dress with sheer cut-outs at the VMAs. Her hair is still a little questionable but this look is perfect -- and very different than what Miley usually wears.

slide_249048_1483838_free.jpeg
Worst Use of Gold Accessories: 2 Chainz

It's a shame that 2 Chainz is named 2 Chainz, because judging by his VMAs outfit it's obvious that he wants to wear more than just two chains. He piled on every single gold accessory available on the planet that is NOT on a chain. He might want to change his name to "2 Chainz, 9,000 Gold Studs and Other Stuff." Just a thought.

slide_249048_1483693_free.jpeg
Best Use of a Onesie/Worst Use of Cop Attire: Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj pretty much has a full-time hall pass to wear whatever she wants and still look cool, so this crazy, sheer, brocade onesie with a jeweled body-con outline works for her because, well, she's Nicki Minaj. It's actually a pretty tame Minaj ensemble. The oversized sequin cop hat, however, doesn't seem to work with her whole outfit.

slide_249048_1483691_free.jpeg
Worst "I Wanna Be More Mature Because People Still Think I'm A Teen But I'm Actually 22 Years Old" Look: Taylor Swift

After wearing frilly party dress after frilly party dress, Swift's stylists Taylor Swift opted for a more mature white pant-suit for this years VMAs. We applaud her for stepping out of her comfort zone and trying something different, but this outfit is seriously a snooze. We wonder if she actually really liked it?

rexfeatures_1841820cw.jpeg
Best Crazy Matador Look: Ezra Miller

Ezra Miller's "Matador-meets-Woodstock" look will probably get trashed by everyone else in the Universe, but here at Paper we dug his weird outfit! Our crazy September coverboy can do no wrong. Pretty sure he could wear a potato sack to any awards ceremony and still get kudos for being awesome.

Alicia--2557818801840787950.jpeg
Worst Oddly Sewn Gown: Alicia Keys

This weird, silver, oddly sewn gown that Alicia Keys was wearing made her look a really lo-sided Statue of Liberty. It's tucked in, draped and sewn together every which way and it's just confusing!

emma-watson-vma-2012.jpeg
Best Use of Color: Emma Watson

Perks of Being A Wallflower star Emma Watson's ensemble was one of the best looks on the VMAs red carpet. It was cute, colorful, and was paired perfectly with her simple braided updo.

Katy-Perry--2464160656934315022.jpeg
Worst Maximalist Look: Katy Perry

Katy Perry's gown, which manages to combine leather, sheer fabric, a beaded print, AND a train, was pretty overkill in the design department. It also had this weird leather bow hanging off of the bodice which just looked like she had giant black leaves hanging off of her chest. Sorry Katy, but this was pretty tacky.

slide_249048_1483503_free.jpeg
Best Minimalist Look: Rihanna

Just when you think Rihanna has had every hairstyle on the planet, she cuts off all of her locks right before the VMAs and, of course, looks awesome! Her backless white gown might be a little simple, but combined with her new pixie cut and a red lip Rihanna's minimalist look was one of the best of the night.

slide_249048_1483310_free.jpeg
Best Casually Patriotic Look: RuPaul

RuPaul's outfit, a stark white double-breasted blazer, bright red pants, a peek of blue collared shirt, and simple white sandals was so classic and no-fuss. Whether he intended to be overtly patriotic in his color choices, who knows, but it works!

amber rose.jpeg
Best "Hey Everyone, I'm Really Pregnant!" Look: Amber Rose

Amber Rose has a pretty big baby bump, but that didn't keep her from picking a pretty, form-fitting high-necked black lace gown to wear on the red carpet! It was a little Morticia Adams, but it worked for her.

slide_249048_1483430_free.jpeg
Worst Jumpsuit: Rita Ora

Rita Ora's bejeweled jumpsuit is blinding even through the computer screen! It just looks heavy and uncomfortable. The sheer plunging neckline doesn't make the outfit any better, either. Her hair and make-up are A+, but this outfit gets a much lower grade.

zoe-saldana-mtv-vmas-2012-red-carpet-05.jpeg
Best Shoes: Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana's pale fringe-covered dress was cute, but her complicated-looking strappy Salvatore Ferragamo high-heeled sandals were super adorable!

one-direction-vmas-2012.jpeg
Best Matchy-Matchy Group Look: One Direction

Of course, One Direction looked all dapper and clean-cut in matching black and red ensembles. Though we were a bit puzzled by Niall Horan's simple red french undershirt. Is he supposed to be "the casual one?" Do they even have designated personalities?  We don't know, but they look nice as a group!

Behind the Scenes of Designer Katie Gallagher's Hilarious Model Casting

Most designers cast models by having them walk in their samples. They snap some Polaroids, look at their books and send them on their way. And then there's designer Katie Gallagher who does things a little differently. We've had our eye on the the up-and-coming designer for a while now, and its great to see that behind her cool-girl designs there is indeed a very, very cool girl. Watch as Gallagher does her casting on her roof while wearing a bathing suit and asks models to hold her obese cat, Sveater. Oh my god, this video could not be funnier. Watch, watch, watch!

Amidst all the NYFW hubbub going on at Lincoln Center, we had the chance to steal a moment with model and MTV's newly-named House of Style co-host, Joan Smalls, during the 'Fit For Fashion' event and ask her about the new gig, what she thought of her recent jaunt to the VMAs and hard-hitting questions like which designers have the best food backstage at the shows.  Read on.

Congratulations on landing the co-hosting gig for the re-booted House of Style!

Thank you! It's [the kind of] new adventure that you never thought you'd be a part of and now that it's here, I'm extremely happy.  You see the clips of Cindy Crawford, Rebecca Romijn and they did such a great job.  They introduced the world to pop culture and fashion and had a really great insight into what it is that [models] do.

Did you watch the original House of Style on MTV as a kid?
No, I was too little.  I've watched video clips that they have on MTV.

Can you share any teasers from the upcoming season?

Well, I can't give too many teasers away but we'll start filming during Fashion Week in New York, Milan and Paris.

Will there be scenes of you going backstage like Cindy Crawford did and hanging out with your friends and other models?

Yeah, all that good stuff! You'll get to see the different dynamics models have [with each other] backstage and you'll get the inside look at the designers.

Whom do you most want to interview for House of Style?

I'd love to talk to Kanye West and Rihanna.  I think they're both very stylish and Rihanna's extremely daring with what she does. I really appreciate that.

And, speaking of Rihanna, you guys were both at the VMAs on Thursday. How were they?

The energy was so insane!  And to see Rihanna perform was fantastic but my favorite was Frank Ocean.

Do you get star-struck at all when you see these artists?
No.

Moving on to Fashion Week, do you have any rituals or things you always bring with you to help you get through it?

I always make sure I travel with make-up wipe removers.  Instead of having someone take off your make-up constantly, you can do it yourself in-between one show and the other and you can cut the time.  I also carry my own mascara sometimes and lip balm.

What designers have the best snacks or drinks backstage?

Christian Dior has good food.  They have a lot of sweets!  Donna Karan also has good food.  She has pasta and sandwiches - warm food.

That seems surprising that she feeds her models all those carbs!

Yeah but [models] don't have time in-between to eat so you need to have food [like that] backstage to munch on before you go onto the next show.

ThreeASFOUR's Magnetic Fields

ThreeASFOUR based their S/S '13 show yesterday at Bowery gallery The Hole around "the unseen energies of the human magnetic field." Through the eyes of the deeply creative and avante design trio, this entailed caped, mod ensembles in vibrant, stained-glass-like patterns of bold purples, pinks and orange. Continuing their galactic F/W '12 theme, ThreeASFOUR also decked the models out in Spock-esque unibrows and chunky shattered-glass platform shoes, giving the whole collection an alien-priestess-meets Carnaby Road feel. Check out Rebecca Smeyn's backstage and runway photos from the show below.

What's your least favorite model pose? The hand-on-popped-hip? The duck-lips-kiss-face? The I-have-a-spinal-problem-shoulder-hunch? And, if you had to choose, what would your fashion spirit animal be? A shark? A gazelle? (Please don't say cat.) Crashin' Fashion Week correspondent Steven Rojas stopped by Lincoln Center yesterday to get all of these burning questions answered by NYFW attendees in the hilarious clip above. Check it out.

Woods' "Cali in a Cup" Is Our Music Video of the Day

Though folk rockers Woods call Brooklyn home, you'd never know it after watching their Instagram-y video for "Cali in a Cup," featuring daydream-y, vintage-style clips of the band playing at a surf shack and a summer camp, hanging out in a little motel that we imagine to be somewhere near the Redlands and road tripping to the beach.  The takeaway?  We'd like to teleport to NoCal and join them.  Watch the video above.

"Cali in a Cup" appears on Bend Beyond, out 9/18 on Woodsist.
