Every Halloween hordes of high-fashion hipsters head to Lafayette Street to the vintage store Screaming Mimi's which as become ground zero for Halloween costume shopping for style insiders. Tipped off to the themes of all the regular Halloween hooteannies, Mimi's owner Laura Wills has racks of looks ready to go in September. This year Wills approached Pratt, one of nation's leading fashion schools, to have students compete in a Halloween costume design contest. The judges included Wills, Vogue's Lynn Yaeger and yours truly.
The theme was 'under the sea' and the winner was promised cash money and a spot in the window as part of the Screaming Mimi's Halloween display. Well the kids did such a great job they all won prize money and all the costumes are on display (and for sale) at the store. You still have time to rush to Mimi's and pick up one of the costumes!
