Ava Nirui and Alex Lee are finally giving Barbie a much-needed makeover -- and even better, it's with convention-defying looks from the likes of Hood By Air, Jacquemus, 69, VETEMENTS and Eckhaus Latta.
That's right, by taking these strangely-sexualized female toys and outfitting them in designers known for their gender-neutrality, the duo are trying to subvert the hyperfeminine constructs attached to the Barbie brand by creating alternatives that aim to "erase gender separation."
"These designers represent a part of the fashion world that aims to make us second guess everything we thought we knew about who's meant to wear what," Lee told Dazed in a recent interview. "These are the designers that interest us. They're the ones we think are worth celebrating."
