Like the rest of the country, we've spent the past week remembering how great Whitney Houston's music is. On the eve of her funeral tomorrow in New Jersey, we therefore can't think of a better video to post for Oldie-But-Goodie Friday than Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody." It's an '80s pop video at its best: synth beats, hand claps, paint-splattered backdrops and giant hair. The fashion in this video is also quintessential '80s, from belted jeans to skin-tight knit dresses, all of which point to pretty much everything you see for sale in American Apparel today. This was one of the first videos we can clearly remember watching on MTV as kids, and, to us, Houston seemed like the prettiest, coolest girl. We pictured her driving around Beverly Hills in a convertible (which obviously had a car phone) and doing other various glamorous things that we associated with style, sophistication and beauty but were probably just indicated by what we saw in perfume commercials for Exclamation Perfume by Coty or some such.
