Your Guide to Armory Arts Week 2013

armoryshow.gifThe Armory Show might be one of the most important art fairs in the world, but it can also be suffocatingly difficult to navigate. Lucky for you, Paper has gathered this week's best events and shows for you right here in one spot. Check out our picks at The Armory Show below: 

The SPRING/BREAK Art Show (see pics here), a "curated-driven" show featuring work from the five boroughs, is back. This year's theme is "New Mysticism," and will pair digital art practices and technology with older 20th century art.
The Old School in NoLita at 233 Mott Street, March 7th-10th

This MoMA Armory Party, which benefits exhibition programming, will feature a performance by the one and only Solange along with other DJs and live musicians in celebration of the opening of The Armory Show. Supporting the arts and getting to dance to one of our favorite singers ever? Yeah, we're there. 
Wednesday, March 6th,VIP Access: 8pm-12pm, General Admission: 9pm-12pm

Brooklyn-based artist Travis Boyer will invite the audience to drink tequila off his chest for a "margarita performance" that engages in relational performance and feminist iconography. Sounds like our kind of art!
ISA, 348 Wythe Avenue (upstairs), Wednesday, March 6th, 9pm-2am

Come see a group exhibition of Bronx-based artists curated by the Bronx River Art Center. At night, the event will feature live music, dancing and a spoken word performance. Andrew Freedman Home 1125 Grand Concourse, Thursday, March 7th, 11am-5pm 

Bushwick Armory Night at NURTUREart

NURTUREart Gallery will be open until 10 p.m. on March 9th in Bushwick. It will be the last night to see the Gallery's exhibition "Never While You're Sleeping..." by Siobhan McBride. Other galleries in the area will be staying up late as well and you can score drink specials at local bars with the secret password "Bushwick Galleries Late Night." Ooh, secret!

Aperture at The Armory Show
The Aperture Foundation's recently launched photography magazine Aperture will be showcasing the limited-edition photographs of Rinko Kawauchi, Richard Misrach, Dough Rickard and others.
Booth 287, Pier 94, Thursday, March 7th-10th, 12pm-7pm

Mana Contemporary Honors Marina Abramović
The holy grandma of performance art Marina Abramović will be honored for her body of work and her achievements in the arts. The invite-only event, which will be hosted by Charlie Rose, will also include a modern dance performance choreographed by Karole Armitage.

The (Un)Fair Anti-Armory Show

Do you hate boring art booths and love free ice cream? Then you''ll love (UN)FAIR, a pop-up exhibition featuring a small group of artworks on display that shy away from the more traditional, commercialized art fair scene. The event is hosted by Ben and Jerry's, so that means awesome free ice cream for all as well.
500 West 52nd Street, March 6th-10th.

Volta NY 2013
Volta, an invitational show of up and coming artists and their solo projects. Through this innovative solo format, featuring artists and galleries of any age, Volta's take on contemporary at is far beyond the traditional art fair format.

Occupy Art Free Art Exchange

Occupy Museums is having a free art for fair exchange event outside The Armory Show to celebrate a new kind of art market that breaks away from the capitalist commodification of art. Bring your art and your radical ideas.
Piers 92 & 94, March 10th-11th, 1-4pm

Personal Desire Propaganda
Curator Grayson Cox is putting on an art show as part of Brooklyn Armory that features $10 limited-edition posters designed by 27 different artists. Now everyone can walk away from The Armory Show with a piece of art!

The Tumblr Art Symposium

Art blog Hyperallergic and Tumblr are presenting the world's first Tumblr symposium for art in Bushwick. In addition to exhibitions featuring prominent artists who use Tumblr primarily as their medium the event will also have drinks and dancing. We can't wait to see our Tumblr dashboard favorites IRL.

Fountain Art Fair

Rooted in the Williamsburg art scene, the Fountain Art Fair celebrates smaller, independent galleries and aims to re-define the art fair experience from a more alternative and avant-garde position. This year Fountain's eclectic exhibitors include ART Collective, Uprise Art, iArt4 and more.

Scope International Art Fair
