Inspired by youth protests movements -- spanning from the sixties to modern-day Occupy Wall Street -- Chloe Sevigny's presentation for her fifth collection for Opening Ceremony featured the actress and models in mod-cut gingham dresses, printed blouses and striped stockings carrying protest signs. "Chloe designed the whole [collection]," Opening Ceremony's Humberto Leon told us at the presentation. "She went to Occupy [Wall Street] a lot...and, thorough her lens, the collection [is inspired] by all of the things you would embrace as a teenager trying to fight for your rights."
And, just as music has long played a central role in protest culture -- from sixties icons like Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan or Joan Baez to contemporary acts like Rage Against the Machine or JD Samson performing at Occupy Wall Street -- the actress had enlisted a kick-ass coterie of rockers to participate and perform. Kim Gordon, Lizzi Bougatsos from Gang Gang Dance (and Sevigny's BFF), Lissy Trullie, Light Asylum's Shannon Funchess were all stationed throughout the church and, at different intervals, treated the crowd to mini-concerts. As we made our way out, we bumped into Natasha Lyonne who gushed, "There's never been anything like this and I think it's brilliant because it's not just about the clothes -- it's about individualistm and a one-of-a-kind point of view, which is what self expression and fashion should be."
