We're going to go out on a limb and say that the spicy cumin lamb burger at Xi'an Famous Foods is probably unlike any burger you've had before: there's no patty in sight. The crispy bun may also surprise those expecting a doughy mantou style bread, but the alternative nicely soaks up this sandwich's succulent strips of meat sauteed with pickled jalapenos, scallions, and onions while offering a satisfying crunch. Chef Jason Wang may have been included in a recent New York magazine piece titled "The Year of Asian Hipster Cuisine," but among his tattoo-sleeved peers, the owner of the Xi'an Famous Foods chain of restaurants stands out for his commitment to traditional Chinese cuisine, specifically that of the northwestern provinces (read our recent Q&A with Wang here). Those looking to go the extra mile might take a hint from the Awl and concoct their own "tiger lamb sandwich," layering in a healthy dose of lao hua zi tiger vegetables for extra acidity and citrus. But at the unbeatable price of $3, this baby is undoubtedly a winner on its own.
