Scope Fabulous Photos of 1970s-Era Pedestrians On Their Lunch Hour

Charles H. Traub's new book Lunchtime celebrates the fabulousness of workaday people. Comprised of images taken of passersby on the street at lunchtime in New York, Chicago and various European cities between 1977-1980, Traub's approach to spontaneous portraiture gets uncomfortably close to the subject magnifying the individual's idiosyncrasies. A subtle smile, a furrowed brow, an exaggerated pout all feel incredibly vulnerable somehow. Preferring to focus on regular pedestrians, Traub said in a press release that he "avoided the celebrities and the famous. I even turned down Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who once stopped to be photographed. She was the most famous woman in the world!" He continued, "My intention was to draw attention to the distinct uniqueness of everyday people." Vibrant and colorful, Lunchtime nods back to an era where we may have dressed a little more flamboyantly but reveals a timeless humanity that inhabits us all. Take a look at photos from the book below.

Revolution Girl Style Forever: Tobi Vail and Kathi Wilcox On The Beginnings Of Bikini Kill

tumblr_nao8njPCfd1qbvkmso1_1280.jpgBikini Kill in the April 1992 issue of Paper

In their seven years of existence, Riot Grrrl pioneers Bikini Kill inspired a generation of women to proudly declare themselves feminist and to then go about dismantling the patriarchy in the most DIY-fashion possible, all while making jam after eternal punk jam.  For their troubles, they often faced hostile audiences (bassist Kathi Wilcox recalls a show where someone threw a chain at her head), and a hostile press (at one point they went into a full media blackout and refused to give any mainstream outlet an interview), as well as no shortage of inner-band strife. (Wilcox says that, at the time, communication skills were not the group's specialty.)

Like any good legend, Bikini Kill has appropriately humble roots. The group, (which included Wilcox, drummer Tobi Vail, guitarist Billy Karren and iconic front person Kathleen Hanna) recorded their first demo, the recently reissued (in expanded and remastered form) Revolution Girl Style Now!, in one day shortly after forming. They had a played a show at the Olympia, Washington venue ABC House the day before recording and left their equipment there.

"We had been playing together for less than six months and had only played a handful of shows, most of them as a three piece -- Kathleen, Kathi and me. The recording took place right after Billy joined and was still learning the songs. The demo was recorded by Pat Maley, a guy we kind of knew who had a DIY studio called Yo Yo in the basement of an anarchist house," says Vail. "I think we needed to record in order to have a tape to send out so that we could book a tour, so we were kind of rushing things a little. I don't think any of us were satisfied with the recording, but, Kathleen sounds amazing on the tape so it kind of worked."

Though Wilcox had originally hoped to release the tape, which indeed is fierce and forceful if no one's idea of professional, through Dischord Records, their friend Ian MacKaye told them that his label was strictly for Washington, D.C. bands. After self-releasing Revolution, they eventually went with local label Kill Rock Stars, whose owner, Slim Moon, Wilcox would often call frantically on tour to ask for more tapes so they could eat. (To handle the reissues, the band members along with Toby's sister Maggie, a former Kill Rock Stars manager, started Bikini Kill Records.)

Revolution was released as a cassette in 1991. Their full-length debut,  Pussy Whipped was released in 1993. Shortly after the release of 1996's Reject All American, Bikini Kill were done, but riot grrrl was just getting started. The band's unapologetic, brash influence isn't just seen in young groups like Pussy Riot and White Lung and Hanna's dancier projects like Le Tigre and the Julie Ruin (for which Wilcox plays bass), but to Wilcox's delight, in mainstream performers like Miley Cyrus and Beyoncé unapologetically declaring themselves feminists.

"Punk bands are a small part of the world; women are 50% of the population," she says. "I'm "flattered that those bands are influenced by us, but even more excited by pop stars, or people in the classical world being inspired by us."

Below, we have additional thoughts from Vail about Bikini Kill's early days and ongoing legacy.

What did you think the first time you went back and listened to Revolution Girl Style Now!? Two decades later, how does it sound to you?

The first thing I noticed is how great Kathleen sounds on the recording. I think it's definitely her best performance of the early songs. Unfortunately, the recording isn't super great, and the sound is a little weird. We decided we wanted to remix it to try and get the most out of the original reels. Instead of us going back into the studio we picked someone we all trusted -- Guy Picciotto -- he did a really great job, and it was a total honor to get to work with him on this.

The other thing I remembered is that Revolution Girl Style Now! was the only recording available for the first two years of our band. We have no idea how many tapes were sold, we didn't keep track, but this is the only recording people knew by us until our first record came. By that time we had already toured the US a few times, moved to D.C., played Hawaii, toured around both coasts extensively and been written about in the mainstream media (Spin, The New York Times, Newsweek, LA Weekly, Melody Maker, etc. etc. ) It's kind of crazy that all that happened on the basis of our live show, a few fanzines and this self-released demo tape. It was all word-of-mouth and DIY -- no label, no publicist, no booking agent. So in that context it makes sense to do a reissue, it's a big part of our history.

When did you get a sense that there was something bigger at work than a local scene with you and your friends? What was the first inkling you had that the ideas your band embodied were starting to spread nationwide?

We went on our first US tour with Nation of Ulysses a few months after we recorded (June 1991) and self-released the tape. It started in the Bay Area and that was great -- we connected with some girls there who had fanzines like Janelle Hessig's Tales of Blarg and met Tribe 8 and Blatz and a bunch of queer-feminist punks who were doing similar stuff. The rest of the "tour" was pretty bleak, as were the next few tours we did with Nation of Ulysses. It was great to play with them every night but not very many people came to our shows. Kathleen, Billy and I stayed in DC for the summer while Kathi went to Europe. In DC, we started a fanzine called riot girl with our friends in Bratmobile, who were also there for the summer. At the end of the summer, we all met up in Olympia for IPU, the International Pop Underground festival organized by K Records. We managed to convince the organizers to have a night of music by women-only and that was called "Girl Night." Heavens To Betsy played their first show that night. Riot Grrrl was starting in Olympia when we were in D.C., and I think at that point it seemed like we could take it further than just our immediate scene through touring and trading tapes and fanzines through the mail. Ultimately we wanted girls to participate in the making of culture as a way to change society -- that is what Revolution Girl Style Now! stood for at the time.

On that note, when did you notice that a younger generation was discovering your band and the ideals you were fighting for? How did it feel to know that, in a way, Bikini Kill lived on?

Well, I live in Olympia, which is to say that I'm still very much involved in DIY-punk-independent-underground music or whatever you wanna call it. I ran the mail-order department at Kill Rock Stars for almost 20 years and have been doing mail-order for Bikini Kill Records for the past few years -- so it doesn't come as a surprise to me at all. There were feminists involved in punk pre-Bikini Kill and that continues today, so it makes sense that people are still interested in the ideas and music. We are definitely a part of a continuum of "punk rock feminisms" in that sense.

At the same time, reunions of bands from the alternative rock hey-day have been big business for the past decade or so. Has Coachella or anyone ever tried to get Bikini Kill to play a show? Do you have any interest in a band reunion, or is that not your style?

It's not possible at this time, and I personally can't see it happening, but you never know. Basically, we were ready when the group ended and we are all happily involved in other musical projects. It seems like it would be difficult to recreate that moment and I'm not sure we'd even want to try -- for many reasons -- one of them being that it was really intense and stressful being in Bikini Kill. It was kind of a relief when it was over, and I think we did everything we set out to do by the end of the group -- it was really hard -- rewarding but exhausting. I'm glad to see bands like Priests, Downtown Boys, Vexx, G.L.O.S.S., Perfect Pussy etc. doing similar stuff right now but it's not the same -- which is very cool.

What prompted you and your sister to start your own label to reissue Bikini Kill's catalog? And what has the remastering and repackaging process been like?

Bikini Kill Records is owned by the four of us -- Kathleen, Kathi, Billy and me. Maggie is the manager of the label and I do mail-order. Kill Rock Stars was very good to us and that situation worked for a long time, but things changed at the label and we didn't have a reason to stay after Maggie and I were no longer working there. When we got our tapes back from Kill Rock Stars, Kathi, Kathleen and I met up for the first time since the band broke up and decided to start our own label. From my perspective, I couldn't think of anyone who we could trust that would do a better job than we could do ourselves. As soon as Maggie agreed to manage the label for an equal share of the profit we knew we were solid. I wish there were more women-owned feminist labels, and I wish that independent labels were better at paying bands and doing business ethically.  We need to make sustainability a punk value. Most bands that are active don't have time to start their own label, so we are in a good position to do that now that we are broken up.

Finding Magic From the Court to the Studio With Electronic Producer Sporting Life

Screen Shot 2015-10-09 at 5.14.54 PM.pngThere's a well worn stereotype that says jocks and art kids can't be friends, much less be the same person. But New York-based electronic producer Sporting Life is turning that cliché on its head. If his name and profession aren't enough of an indication, the video for his single "Badd" seals the deal and conveys the essence of his identity and intention as a solo artist. In it Sporting Life encounters a gauntlet of challengers on the basketball court to the sound of his music, a hyperkinetic blend of sleek footwork and Harlem rap á la the Diplomats heydey. The track appears on the producer's recently-released debut solo album, 55 5's, out now via tastemaking Belgian electronic label R&S.

We had the chance to spend time with the producer to chat about the album, a conversation that veered back-and-forth between his thoughts on music, basketball, and art. He playfully calls out Kanye to challenge him to a game of one-on-one and talks about the ways in which basketball is an art form, and one that reminds him of Matthew Barney's Drawing Restraint work, a piece notable for its required endurance training and Barney's own admission that the piece was inspired by his experiences as a former athlete. Inspired by Barney, Sporting Life is setting out to prove that, as he puts it, "dudes who have ill crossovers also know how to midi-sync Ableton to MPC 2500s."

As the producer for experimental hip-hop trio Ratking, Sporting Life creates a plexus of sounds that resemble the noise of No Wave and the stress rap that comes with being a New Yorker. Since the release of the Wiki93 EP on XL Recordings in 2012, Ratking has delivered two albums and toured extensively with artists like Earl Sweatshirt, Run The Jewels, Trash Talk, and Death Grips. And still, in the demanding years of touring and recording, Sporting Life managed to explore opportunities outside the group.

The 33-year-old producer, born Eric Adiele, talks about the evolution of his music and ability the same way a disciplined athlete might talk about their evolution as a player. He believes in constant practice and the idea that fundamentals are the foundation on which you are able to create. He says that he didn't want to embellish his basketball skills on "Badd" by having him dunk on opponents since he can't actually do so. 55 5's is no different. There are few flashy moves and Sporting Life does not try to perform outside his limitations. He applies what he knows with precision. But that doesn't mean that the record isn't full of surprises -- much like the fact that he's in the business of relying on his off hand when playing ball.

"I'm a righty, but I go left mostly," he says. "If people think I'm a lefty from the video then I've already got a few of them fooled." It's the on-the-court equivalent to Nas saying "ahh made you look." It's a characteristic great athletes develop and many rap artists imitate, a survival tactic incumbent upon keeping the opposition on its toes.

It's apparent Sporting Life is a student of the game. He knows his playing style as both an artist and an athlete and he describes his basketball game as more akin to "soccer style" of play -- "everything comes off a hesitation." His ability to ambidextrously dribble illustrates his attention to balance. He says a music analogue to this ambidextrousness would be going from Aphex Twin to Young Thug.

"I watch producers like ball players or watch rappers like ball players," he says. "It's like when ball players are watching other ball players. I ask, what am I missing and how much time will it take for me to gain this skill? Like maybe I'm missing some Mike Will Made It drums and it's something I gotta practice."

Several times he mentions levels and powering up like stages in a videogame or he's a Shaolin monk training in the 36 chambers. "You can unlock other levels like a video game. So I've unlocked a couple and that goes into the progression that's heard in the sound." In discussing the labyrinthian process of learning Ableton he also compared it to solving a Rubix cube -- which he admits he's never done -- in that everyone uses it in different ways and there is no singular path to mastering it.

55 5's was recorded as live takes, in which Sporting Life collected sounds for each particular track and recorded it without interruption or adding overdubs later. Some tracks are two years old, while others were composed only months before the release. But no matter when they were recorded, before setting down the live track he practiced, training his hands to respond intuitively.

"[Athletes] spend all this time lifting weights and training their whole lives just to play a game," Sporting Life says. "Really the outcome kinda doesn't matter. Virtually who cares really if you win or lose. But the passion of wanting to win. I tried to transfer that into music."

He also compared his mapping strategy to William S. Burrough's cut-up technique, in which everything is known and laid out so that it may be rearranged in hopes of divine discovery.

"Recording it live is the easiest way I can get things done," he says. "I set up a beat for maybe an hour or so. I get it like a soup, get it bubbling and boiling first, and then you can serve it out. So I was doing that by getting pieces I can change like maybe throw some midi-effects on the drums to switch it up."

Much like RATKING bridges street mixtapes with an experimental 1970s No Wave mentality, Sporting Life's solo production connects disparate elements, from the ambient futurism of Arca and Actress to the jitters of footwork and the DIPSETian glory of Heatmakerz circa Diplomatic Immunity. It's a blend of styles and sounds, of indie and mainstream, that's like the sonic equivalent to a ballplayer's crossover.

But, like any true student, just because Sporting Life's seem to have mastered the crossover, that doesn't mean he's satisfied that he knows everything he needs to.

"I already know what [the album is] missing compared to the new stuff I'm hearing and where I want to go. You should always respect what you've made even if you're over it and on to something else because you never know if you'll be able to duplicate the things you've made. I've asked myself what is my game and what am I missing?"

A New Group Show Opens Underneath the Opulent Williamsburg Savings Bank

Directly under the Williamsburg bridge in Brooklyn, the lavish domed building of the former Williamsburg Savings Bank, built in 1875 and now an event space called Weylin B. Seymour's, is impossible to miss. Renovated only a few years ago and used mostly for high society weddings, it's an unapolegetically opulent building in a neighborhood full of brick warehouses, unremarkable-looking walk-ups and bland luxury condos. The historic landmark, which isn't open to the public, is swinging its doors open for a new exhibit by Santiago Rumney Guggenheim.

BFA_1444421293_1703808.jpgOlek in front of some of her pieces

Peggy Guggenheim's great grandson has brought his gallery to the basement of the bank where it will feature Some Place Like Home, the inaugural group show featuring mixed mediums like yarn works by Olek, video projection by Michelle P.Dodson, wheat pasting and paintings by Swoon, Olivia Steele's neon musings, and a large mirrored house, only accessible by crawling through a small hole, created by Moral Turgeman. We had the chance to scope out the show at last night's opening and we found the work to be surprisingly young and relaxed for a space of such stature; similarly, the crowd at the opening was a healthy mix of the art community and neighborhood residents anxious for a peek at both the exhibit and the opulent space.

BFA_1444421291_1703863.jpgMoral Turgeman

For his part, Rumney Guggenheim, despite his posh name, says he's most excited to explore artists, new mediums and new ways of thinking about community outreach. "In my space I want to been seen as somewhere that promotes culture," he says, hoping to include pop-ups, dinners, and kids classes as part of the gallery's programming. "I want to bring art to the local people, and open it up to the community." You'll get your first chance at Some Place Like Home.

Some Place Like Home will be on view until November 11 at Rumney Guggenheim, located in the basement of the Williamsburg Savings Bank, 834 Driggs Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211.

What Do You Feed? Justin Bieber's Dad Has the Most Embarrassing Response to His Son's Nudes

The collective reaction to the publication of Justin Bieber's nudes has been a little frenzied, but we can all let ourselves off the hook a little bit, because none of us will have a response quite as mortifying as Bieber's dad Jeremy.

It's not quite a "dad" response (since he's not, like, making comments about how tiny it was when Justin was a baby), but the unconditional (and unconditionally awkward) support is a little bizarre. At least it's a good opportunity to make "What Do You Feed?" a thing.

If you're not satiated by double tapping these pics alone, there's also a whole blog in the same name to explore.

Aside from being remembered for her uber democratic approach to modern royalty and good will, Diana has become one of thequintessential icons of 80s and 90s fashion. Nowstalgia, indeed.

Whether wearing a sequined party dress, simple black blazer, or an oversized T on the beach with Wills and Harry, Di was consistently fierce as f*ck, while hauntingly vulnerable all at once.

Bow Down To Victor Cruz's Fiancee, Elaina Watley

Victor-Cruz-Elaina-Watley.jpgThe star of NY Giants wide receiver and Super Bowl champ Victor Cruz has officially taken a backseat to Elaina Watley..hisfiancee and the mother of his 3-year-old daughter.

By back seat, I mean strapped to the top of a Lexus SUV, and driven down the New Jersey Turnpike at 90 mph during a thunderstorm.

On Tuesday, October 6th, 2015, in the wake of Victor's numerous martial infidelities being made public, Elaina took it upon herself to send a group text message to Victor and most of his alleged sidepieces.

Elaina-Watley.jpgNot surprisingly, the text was leaked.

In a very demure fashion, Elaina politely introduced herself to the ladies, and urges them to "compare notes" with each other.

Here's the text that's been circling the web, via MediaTakeOut:

Screen Shot 2015-10-10 at 12.02.04 PM.pngExcuse me while I breathe into a paper bag.

The text has been confirmed by Victor himself, who has since stated that he needs to continue his hiatus from playing to tend to his injured calf. Uh-huh.

We all need to take a moment to salute Elaina.

She looked out at the horizon before her -- that terrible, daunting and sickly Tuesday sky -- and made it her helpless bitch.

Elaina the Great, merciless vanquisher of Thot-dom, Victor should feel lucky to have you. Slay on, queen.

The Autumn Of Mischa Barton: Her 5 Best Roles

o-MISCHA-BARTON-facebook.jpgThe semi-tragedy of Mischa Barton adds a new chapter to its wet pages: her brand new Audi Q3 is in danger of being repossessed.

According to Page Six, the 29-year-old actress put a $2,300 down payment on the car back in March, agreeing to a $696.29 a month lease.

Unfortunately, Mischa has only made one monthly payment in nearly half a year, and her car is up for grabs unless she makes a full payment of $40k.

There was a time, in the dewy, amber summer of the early-to-mid-aughts, when Mischa sat atop a celebrity throne, adorned with ivy and dragonflies, starring as Marissa Cooper in The OC.

943537-mischa-barton.jpgBut then, as the world began to crumble in the late 2000s, so did Mischa, entering the misty purgatory of having been on that show. You know? Remember that show. It was so good, that show.

Aside from a brief psychiatric 5150 hold following a tooth infection in 2009, and her current lawsuit against her former momager, Mischa has mostly been seen walking around L.A., wearing fedoras, chunky statement jewelry, and starring in complicated, straight to DVD horror movies.

Mischa+Barton+fedora+hat.jpg
Mischa deserves better! She is better! RePo Man and Hollywood Man, be damned, Mischa is a fine, natural actress, and has starred in some seriously cool shit.

Here are my five fave Mischa roles.

hoss60.jpg5. Kyra Collins (The Sixth Sense): Our introduction to Mischa in The Sixth Sense, vomiting as Haley Joel Osment's flashlight shines on her pale face, has been seared into the cultural psyche. Mischa's Kyra, a young ghost murdered by her Munchausen-syndrome-afflicted mother, doesn't say much, but her presence is undeniable.

tumblr_nuwhbgYZpq1s7xfipo6_500.jpg4. Nat Wilson (Octane): A seriously bizarre and disturbing British movie about a girl named Nat (Barton) who gets abducted from her mother (Madeline Stowe) by a sexual, muderous cult, led by Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Bijou Phillips. It's a pretty terrible script, but Mischa's acting (along with the killer soundtrack by UK Electro-masters Orbital) is the stand-out.

tumblr_na1rfek6IC1qzhvd4o1_500.png3. Grace (Tart): A movie starring Melanie Griffith, Dominique Swan, Bijou Phillips, AND Brad Renfro? Throw Mischa in there, and it's magic. The movie centers around Dominique Swan's foray into the dark world of Manhattan prep schools; Mischa stars as a prickly British exchange student. It's basically Gossip Girl, but real.

shot25.jpg  2. Mary "Mouse" Bedford (Lost and Delirious): Mischa's turn in the lesbian-themed, Canadian indie Lost and Delirious, was seriously underrated. Mary, a timid freshman at an all-girls boarding school, rooms with seniors Polly and Tori (Piper Perabo and Mad Men's Jessica Pare), and quickly discovers that the two are secret lovers. It's a beautiful film, and Mischa conveys the sexual awakening of a naive, wounded girl with great subtly and patience.

mischa9.gif1. Marissa Cooper (The OC): Not much justification needed. Marissa was THE Girl of the 2000s; the crop-top, jean skirt wearing embodiment of pre-2008 America. We miss you, Marissa.

We miss you, Mischa.

kim_kardashian_marnie_the_dog.jpgMarnie the Dog, the regal, rescued Shih Tzu who's dominated Instagram for the past two years with photos and videos of her adventures around the world, and meetings with various A-List celebs, now has a way to bring her essence into the lives of all us plebs.

The tongue-lagging dog's "team" created an app called "Marnie Pro," where users can insert photos of the pooch's glorious resting state (aka laying, eating things, poking around) into their own, personal photos.

Screen Shot 2015-10-10 at 3.01.30 PM.pngThe result is simply joyous-something our our weary world could use more of these days.

Since announcing the app a few days ago, the Internet-not surprisingly-has gone crazy for it.

The 10 Most Stylish Horror Movies To Set The Halloween Mood

rosemarys-baby_mia-farrow_breton-hat-cubmp.jpg
With Halloween's sticky, glittery scythe drawing nigh, there is no better time to settle in with a horror movie or five.

And why not choose one that's as chic to the eye as it is reveling in the shimmering decay of the undead?

Sure!

While many horror movies place carnage over everything else, some have been able to find the perfect balance of terror and genius sense of fashion, which end up perfectly complimenting each other.

Here are the 10 most stylish horror movies for the Halloween season, ranked.

10. John Carpenter's The Thing (1980):
Carpenter's remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic does everything to the nine: relentless gore, incredible sound editing, cinematography, music and WARDROBE. His characters--a team of all-male scientists, trying to survive a brutal, carnivorous alien in an Antarctic research outpost--don fur coats, trench leather coats, long-johns, huge, ugly boots, and none of them look like they've showered in weeks. But that's what makes it so great; the grime and bleakness of the situation, and the brute, utilitarian wardrobe just fits entirely together. And it's really hot.
Kurt Russell, bearded and clad in leather.

9. The Omen (1976):
Aside from the obvious iconic moments-the nanny hanging herself at Damien's birthday party, freak decapitations, the little "666" haircut moment-the movie was peak 70s in its fashion of the aristocratic family in focus.
the-omen.jpgFrom Damien's black riding cap in the infamous final scene, his Satanic nanny's puritanical coats and skirts, to Lee Remick's sky blue head wrap, it's snobbery at its most evil.
turbans-2-lee-remick-the-omen.jpg
8. Suspiria (1977):
Dario Argento's bloodbath set in a ballet school run by murderous witches takes everything to the extreme. Prom gowns, pantsuits, and billowy blouses that look like something Diane Von Furstenberg would have worn/maybe still wear.

suspiria1.jpgThe headmistress witches on the other hand? Kris Jenner WISHES.

jessica-harper-alida-valli-renato-scarpa-suspiria-1977-07-g.jpg

7. Poltergiest (1980):
The movie captured the menacing dullness of living in the early wave suburban McMansion developments, but the characters' outfits are as early 80s alive as the ghosts haunting them are dead. The onesies, short-shorts, rugby shirts, and over-sized Oxfords: WASP Hell.

poltergeist-1982-movie-f.jpg And JoBeth Williams' football jersey as a whole outfit? THE LOOK.
dvd.png
6. The Shining (1981):
Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall's wardrobe may not be the most diverse in Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece, but can you blame them? They're trapped in a impossibly large hotel in the Colorado Rockies for the winter. Comfort is key. Plus there are ancient ghosts trying to kill their son. But don't tell me Nicholson's flannels and maroon cardigan sweater isn't synonymous with PBR. It's as Brooklyn hipster as they come.
And I swear I've seen Williamsburg moms wearing this Duvall outfit on the L train.

 5. It Follows (2014): The time period-ambiguous indie horror was a mega hit, praised for its acting, music, and genuine horror. But the lack of grounding in time makes it that much more disorienting. Is it some alternate dimension where each year that passes is 3 years our time, so it's still somewhere in the 80s? But with somewhat updated technology? Who knows. Basically, the movie felt like being murdered in an American Apparel store.

it-follows.jpg
4. Halloween (1978): John Carpenter's OTHER horror classic is 70s Americana in the most yasssss way. The movie was so low budget, Curtis actually bought her own character's clothes herself at JCPenney. A true queen.
Screen Shot 2015-10-10 at 5.20.41 PM.png
3. The Birds (1963): Tippi Hedren arriving by boat like this.

TIPPI_THE_BIRDS_03LRG.jpg2. The Hunger (1983): I mean..yeah.

1. Rosemary's Baby (1968):

The 10 Hottest Vampire Movies of All Time (NSFW)

Sex has always been an undercurrent in vampire movies.  When Christopher Lee (as Dracula) chowed down on a new victim on screen there was always a hint of orgasmic pleasure. And when censorship relaxed, filmmakers exploited the breasts and blood angle with wicked abandon. Here are ten sexy, fanged, examples:

tumblr_ne6y2jaEYw1s43lo1o1_500.gifBlood And Roses (1960)
For movie directors, Sheridan le Fanu's novel Carmilla was the go-to book about predatory female vampires. And this underrated film by Roger Vadim (Barbarella) is a beautiful, dreamy, and sensuous retelling of this tale. A fireworks display during a masquerade ball on a European estate unleashes the spirit of an age-old vampire who possesses pouty blonde Carmilla (Annette Stroyberg, who was married to Vadim at the time). A nightmare sequence where the color drains away to black and white with splashes of blood red is surreal and sensational.

tumblr_nfggyeiHZQ1snmmclo1_500.gifVampyres (1974)
A great. sexy shocker directed by Jose Ramon Larraz about two seductive vampires (Marianne Morris and Anulka) roaming the English countryside looking for victims. A young couple staying in a camper witness the girls running with capes through the woods and begin to suspect something is not right. Heavily censored at the time, all the gratuitous nudity and violence is intact thanks to a beautiful uncut Blu-ray from Blue Underground.

tumblr_nfl4dpKnEN1qdezf9o1_500.gifRequiem For A Vampire (1971)
French director Jean Rollin is usually dismissed as the maker of "sexy vampire pictures," which were unfairly critically attacked at the time. But now, thanks to glorious Blu-ray & DVD transfers from Kino Lorber's "Redemption" label, we are able to luxuriate in Rollin's darkly cinematic poetry and sexy obsessions. This movie may be one of his best -- about two girls dressed in clown makeup on the run from the police who end up at a weird chateau and come under the spell of a group of vampires who want to use them to lure other men there and propagate their species. Practically dialogue-free, it's surreal, strange, and unforgettable. Especially memorable is a shot of a bat feeding on a naked girl's crotch.

tumblr_m72pa6LNWy1qh502no1_500.gifDaughters Of Darkness (1971)
I can't say enough about this elegant, erotic, horror film starring the divine Delphine Seyrig as an ageless vampire countess traveling with her cool blonde lover (Danielle Ouimet) and stopping at a coastal off-season Grand Hotel in Ostend. There, she and her protege seduce and quench their blood thirst from young virgins. Directed by Harry Kumel, there are visually sumptuous scenes of mayhem (one involving a glass bowl that is particularly inspired). Blue Underground has given this this film a stunning Blu-Ray release.

Screen Shot 2015-10-10 at 1.39.55 PM.pngThe Vampire Lovers (1970)
Britain's Hammer Films lurid retelling of the Sheridan le Fanu book starring beautiful Ingrid Pitt as the bosomy, predatory, noblewoman who lusts after her female relatives and drains them dry in 18th Century Germany. This was Hammer's last-ditch attempt to breathe life in their brand with lots of heaving breasts and blood and it's great fun. Shout! Factory has this out on a gorgeous Blu-ray.

Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary (1975)

Beautiful Cristina Ferrare (who was in real life once married to auto executive John DeLorean) plays a bisexual artist who is less a vampire than a woman with a rare blood disease who seduces and drains men and women of their life fluid to live. But who is the shadowy figure following her? Directed by Juan Lopez Moctezuma (Alucarda) this is finally out on Blu-ray (looking fabulous) on Code Red.

tumblr_ms0h57ZY5p1qb7e7fo1_r1_400.gifThe Female Vampire (1975)
The wildly prolific Jess Franco, who made close to 200 films in his lifetime, is finally getting the credit he deserves thanks to scholarly books about him like Stephen Thrower's amazing Murderous Passions: The Delirious Cinema Of Jesus Franco. His sado-erotic female fang-banger movies like Vampyros Lesbos are loony wonders. I have a soft spot for this lyrical masterwork starring Franco's wife and muse Lina Romay wandering the countryside practically nude in a black cape who stops to have sex and then drain of blood a series of farmers and noblemen. A gorgeous Blu-ray is available from Kino Lorber.

tumblr_mysf459WJd1re33kmo1_1280.jpgCountess Dracula (1971)

Actress Ingrid Pitt in one of her best performances based on real-life 17th century Hungarian noble woman and serial killer Elizabeth Bathory. Terrified of aging, the Countess discovers the rejuvenating effects of bathing in young girl's blood so she captures and splashes in the hemoglobin of scores of unfortunate villagers. A wedding scene where she suddenly reverts to a withering crone as she strolls down the aisle is fabulous. This digitally restored Blu-ray is out from Synapse.

tumblr_ng6kd4yhMI1qfpn1do1_500.gifThe Blood-Spattered Bride (1972)

This Spanish horror film (and possible political allegory) directed by Vicente Aranda is about a newlywed couple who are stalked by a mysterious woman from their hotel to the husband's family home. Later the groom finds a naked woman buried in the sand, save for a snorkel as a breathing tube. He digs her up, drags her home and lives to regret it. This whole movie is available as an added extra on the terrific Daughters Of Darkness Blu-ray from Blue Underground.

hunger-deneuve-sarandon.jpgThe Hunger (1983)
Tony Scott's exercise is stylish '80s vampire-chic. Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie play Miriam and John, a decadent wealthy couple who pick up couples at nightclubs and, using a gold ankh around their necks, slit the throats of their dates and use their blood to retain their youth. "Forever" they coo at each other in the shower afterwards. Susan Sarandon plays Sarah, a scientist studying diseases of the blood, who is contacted by John when he suddenly starts aging drastically. There was a sexy lesbian love scene between Miriam and Sarah, to which Susan Sarandon admits on the audio commentary of the stunning new Blu-ray available from Warner Archives: "That really changed my fan base..."

The Duplass Bros Launch Oscar Campaign For The Ladies Of 'Tangerine'

Screen Shot 2015-10-11 at 11.03.53 AM.pngJay and Mark Duplass and Magnolia Pictures have officially launched a 2016 Oscar campaign for Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor, the two stars of the critically acclaimed indie dramedy Tangerine, of which the brothers Duplass are both producers.

This marks the first ever campaign for two trans actresses, for the Best Actress (Rodriguez) and Best Supporting Actress (Taylor) categories, respectively. Tangerine itself (directed by Sean Baker) could be looking at a Best Picture nomination.
transgender-hollywood-tangerine.jpgMya Taylor & Kitana Kiki Rodriguez

A darling of the 2015 festival circuit, the movie follows the misadventures of two trans prostitutes on Christmas Eve in Los Angeles.

The innovative film was shot entirely on 3 5s iPhones between December 2013-January 14, matching the story's raw, stripped down content, and setting a new bar in the evolution of low-budget filmmaking.

In an interview with Variety, Mark Duplass acknowledged that while actors have been rewarded and recognized by the Academy for their portrayals of trans people (Leto, Felicity Huffman, Jaye Davidson), they were still cisgender.

Of Rodriguez and Taylor, and the larger aspect of trans actors being recognized for their talent, Duplass said, "This is the time for it; we're in the middle of a civil rights movement," adding that even if the campaign is unsuccessful, they don't consider it a loss.

"This is a long play in our minds," Duplass said.

Matthew Bomer.pngGolden Globe winner Matt Bomer was born in a lush, dewy meadow in 1812 to a deer nymph, with streaks of amber sun rays dancing through the tree branches above.

Actually, the openly gay father of three was born in Missouri in 1977, and grew up in Texas, but I.can.dream.

tumblr_mv31dnbzD21rkxlobo1_500-1.jpgIt is his birthday, though. Happy birthday, Matt!!!!!! Hi!!!!! Hiiiiiii.

Hi.

The star of the actor, whose track record includes The Normal Heart, American Horror Story, Magic Mike (s), and White Collar, has been growing more and more each year. And thank f*cking goodness for that.

Thank goodness for you, Matt.

All The Right Things: 5 Key Moments of the Lady GaGa-sance of 2015:

$

Lady-Gaga-performs-at-2015-Oscars-4.jpgMiss Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (GaGa to most of us) has had a banner 2015.

After a few years of maximum overexposure, the mega pop star took an even deeper plunge into the ocean trench after her endearingly ambitious, but somewhat disastrous 2013 LP Artpop (I say that with much disdain because I actually enjoyed it, but I am fully aware that it was pretty terrible).

lady-gaga-2013-650-430b.jpg Things were looking fairly...expected (?) for the singer who for years had literally willed herself into the 'other' check box with her bare hands.

Fortunately, the chanteuse gave herself a self-imposed exile from the spotlight of sorts, including canceled tour dates for a hip surgery, and an overall emphasis on laying low.

She also got engaged to her longtime boyfriend this winter, the uber sexy and studly actor/model Taylor Kinney, whose all-American looks and demeanor seemed an odd pairing for Gaga, but it's clearly a love-match made in Weirdo Heaven.

la-et-lady-gaga-engaged-taylor-kinney-engagment-ring-wedding-20150216.jpg Basically, GaGa's 2015 has been backed with the flames of a thousand "yaaaaaaaasssing" suns.

The Lady is the real deal.

Here are the 5 best parts of the Lady GaGa-sance of 2015.

cheektocheek-desktop.jpg5. Cheek to Cheek (with Tony Bennett): OK, the album was released in 2014, but yeah. Anyway. You can't deny GaGa's vocal abilities; she's a classically trained pianist and theater nerd who can belt it out and warble goosebumps on your very bones. So when she announced she was doing a JAZZ ALBUM with the legendary Tony Bennett, it garnered both a WTF and "Oh, wait, that's actually perfect" reaction. Let's be honest: it was hard to not snicker at first glimpse of the promos with GaGa and an 89-year-old icon; for one, the album cover looks like Lady and Tony are literally embalmed. You almost got the sense that he didn't even know he was making an album.

WRONG WAS I. WRONG WAS ALL. The album was killer; Bennett was as sharp and velvet as ever, and GaGa, once again, was one step ahead of us all, and transformed herself into bonafide jazz crooner without much effort. Her Artpop truly COULD mean anything. The album won best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at this year's 57th Annual Grammys, and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Just to top it off, GaGa also won the Billboard "Woman of the Year Award" last month.

emmys-lady-gaga-red-carpet-2015-billboard-650.jpg4. Wardrobe:  Shockingly, GaGa has gone for the "less is more" approach to fashion this year, ditching the HP Lovecraft schtick, opting for chic simplicity. With the help of her stylist Brandon Maxwell (whose amazing fashion line debuted at NYFW last month), GaGa has been legitimately owning the red carpets, and casual wear.

@ladygaga.png In some way, she's never been more GaGa than she is today, stripped down and letting the talent speak, rather than the meat dress.

3. Her Collaboration with Tom Ford, Nick Knight, and Nile Rodgers:
Earlier this month, Tom Ford released a music video starring his 2016 Spring/Summer women's collection. Oh, and also GaGa. Covering Chic's classic "I Want Your Love," with production by Nile Rodgers, and direction by Nick Knight, GaGa slayed the legendary song with a new spin on modern disco. It's fresh, and hopefully a direction the crooner will explore in her TBD announced next album. She also starred in the video, looking the fiercest that she has in years.

ahs-lady-gaga-hotel-blood-02_0.jpg
2. American Horror Story: Hotel: With only the first episode under our belt, it's hard to know just how good of an actress GaGa is, being the new star/villain of American Horror Story: Hotel, Ryan Murphy's annual horror anthology on FOX. Hardcore AHS fans were divided after the news that GaGa would be filling the Loubitons of the show's regular star, Jessica Lange. But from her scenes in the season's premiere, GaGa is killing it, literally, as Countess Elizabeth, the owner of the cursed Hotel Cortez. In our first encounter with Actor GaGa, she blows some coke, dons some kinky leather, does this....

1464962070517464747.gif....and then murders/drinks and bathes in the blood of two dumbies she and Matt Bomer picked up for a foursome.

Screen Shot 2015-10-11 at 1.26.36 PM.pngI'd say that's a good start. Good move, G.

1. The 2015 Oscars:
GG's medley from the Sound of Music at the Oscars has already been placed into the library of iconic. Taking the stage in an elegant, custom-made Alaia gown, GaGa's hair and makeup were refined; she was almost...unrecognizable. Her singing was gorgeous, classic, and "Yeah, bitch, I'm that good," without beating it over our heads. It was simply divine. Her standing-O from the teary audience of Hollywood's A-List (and all of us at home), and a hug and kiss from the OG Maria (Queen Julie Andrews) after her performance, heralded the return of Lady GaGa with big gay trumpets blaring.
