Titanic 3D Is Screaming for a Downton Abbey Tie-In

$

downtonabbeytitanic.jpgWhat with all the marketing and promotional hoo-ha surrounding the release of Titanic 3D, we really think they should work in a Downton Abbey tie-in -- since the premise of Downton is that the heir to the title of Earl of Grantham dies aboard the Titanic. Maybe they can invent some link between Jack Dawson and Matthew Crawley, or they can release this poster that we made? Just a thought!

Last night, designer Jeremy Scott and his legion of followers took over Le Bain at The Standard for some post-show partying. Friends of Scott, including Jonny Makeup and the Misshapes, were decked out in head-to-toe S/S '12 Jeremy-wear and threw down on the dance floor to Whitney Houston. We caught up with fashion plate and Misshape Leigh Lezark to chat about his latest collection. "I'd wear 90% of it. It reminded me a lot of the first computer I had in the 90's. Like he screen-capped my AOL Instant Messenger or something." The Simpsons was also on her mind, since Bart was a featured motif throughout yesterday's show. "If I were a Simpson, I'd have to say I'd be Marge's sister, Selma. She's just a cool chick." We also got a chance to talk up one of Jeremy's designer peers, Alexander Wang, who told us about how he's planning on relaxing post Fashion week. "I'm going on vacation." Where? "My apartment. A 'staycation', actually. I'll be closing the blinds and just taking some time to myself." Amen.

Norma Kamali held a futuristic presentation the other day to showcase her main OMO collection, as well as KamaliKulture, her newly launched under-$100 line. Of her lower-priced wares, which she described for ladies "with a lot of style, and no budget" she told Mr. Mickey, "it's what you wear if you have to go to the bank, and don't want to look like a fashion nutcase. If you put on that suit, you'll get the money." Noted.

CLOSED's S/S '12 Mojave Desert Campaign Is All About the Color

It may be dark and sleet-y outside our window but that doesn't mean we're not daydreaming of sunshine and warmer months.  We recently got a hold of images from CLOSED's Spring/Summer 2012 ad campaign, which features four "real people" (a.k.a. non-models) looking lovely and louche in the Mojave desert. The brand, which is based in Germany but is sold throughout the U.S. in stores like Intermix and Fred Segal, often gets compared to the "J. Crew of Germany" for its emphasis on denim and upmarket casual. J.Crew comparisons aside, we love the bright colors of the collection and the neon yellow-green jeans in particular.  We were also intrigued by their models, which include Ry Cuming, an L.A.-based Australian singer/songwriter, L.A-based German actress/writer Jessica Joffe, Michael Fujikawa, a self-described "Man of the People," and Rachel Pouillat, a Berlin-based French DJ.  We kinda wish we had been on-set during their Mojave shoot.

J. Mendel: Puttin' on the Glitz

Giles Mendel's J. Mendel line did not skimp on luxury this season. Mendel, known for his opulent furs and red carpet worthy gowns, showed pleated dresses and gowns that were young and flirty as well as highbrow skirt suits with soft, natural-looking makeup. However, the best of show was a high neck, long sleeve, completely sheer beaded gown that is worthy of a starring role at someone's occasion. It was also only a matter of time before Mendel introduced some shoulder candy. The designer debuted a line of bags at his show yesterday that included a crocodile number lined with mink and alpaca. No sparing the spoiled here. See backstage photos of the show below.

Watch the Finale of Ralph Lauren's Downton Abbey-Inspired Fashion Show

When it comes to truly over-the-top American luxury, no one in fashion can match the legendary Ralph Lauren. Ralph also showed he's in touch with pop culture this morning when he presented a show inspired by the outrageously popular period-soap Downton Abbey, centered around the fabulous, wealthy Crawley family circa WWI. The opening looks were pure Edwardian country life -- tweeds, argyle socks, knickers and walking sticks. The opening music was even the theme from the show!

It seems no one is immune to the charms of Downton. Even Ralph!

Anna Sui's '60s Whimsy

Anna Sui sent an homage to the '60s down the runway yesterday, with a F/W 2012 show featuring a collection of bohemian prints, texture, loads of color and whimsical owl hats! Sui still manages, however, to make lace dresses, plaid capes, faux fur, printed caftans and polka dot evening wear look playful and not campy. And that's why we love her so. See backstage photos of the show below.

Vivienne Tam dreamed up a collection of utopian bliss for her Fall collection that she called "Shangi-La Remix." Though the standouts were the printed outerwear, plenty of fur and a plethora of patterns (including intricate dragon appliques) were woven into a collection of straight-forward separates. These pieces shouldn't just be saved for wonderland. See the backstage photos above of Tam's Fall/Winter 2012 show.

Alberta Ferretti's Future Chic

At her show Thursday, Alberta Ferretti turned to plastic to give her new Philosophy collection a clean, futuristic edge. Her skirt suits, sheath dresses and tailored jackets in faint, neutral colors were cinched with plastic belts. Even lambskin fur coats got the plastic treatment. The collection, which just skirted the realm of minimalism, was adorned with bejeweled collars and dresses got a plastic overlay with crystal beading. The end result looked like something along the lines of work wear for androids. See the backstage photos below.

Patricia Field's Pop Up Fashion Show for ... Kotex

Yesterday, Papermag photographer Rebecca Smeyne stumbled upon a pop-up runway show in Union Square featuring models in lots of colorful, cuckoo looks. Upon further investigation, she realized the show was sponsored by Kotex and that all of the models had been styled by the legendary Patricia Field. The visionary costume designer and stylist recently partnered with the feminine care line to make over their maxi pads with fun designs as part of a campaign called "ban the bland." Rebecca snapped a few pics below of models wearing some of Fields' boonanas creations. Check them out as well as the promotional Kotex video starring Field that we also embedded. "I see a world that's very colorful and textured with ice flying through it " is the best quote ever.

Though Serkan Sarier's budding line Brood usually postpones its show until after Paris Fashion Week, Sarier put himself on the New York Fashion Week calender for the first time this season. And we're so glad we didn't have to wait to see his work. The former assistant to Olivier Theyskens and Emanuel Ungaro featured sporty designs in an abstract, swirled pattern based on work by artist Glenn Brow, as well as shimmering, gold knits with cinched, draw-string silhouettes. Check out Rebecca Smeyne's photos from Thursday's show below.

Rumer's Tour Diary, Part 2: "We Think You're Wonderful"

Rumer, a British-by-way-of-Pakistan artist, sings dusky ballads reminiscent of 70s chanteuses like Carol King and Karen Carpenter; her talent has even caught the eye of Burt Bacharach, who invited the artist to perform at his home. With the U.S. release last month of her debut album, Seasons of My Soul (which was already a hit in the UK when it came out in 2010), and a North American tour to coincide, we've asked Rumer to record her thoughts and impressions for PAPERMAG while she's on the road.

  rumerblog2_1.jpg
rumerblog2_8.jpg
There was snow on the ground in Salt Lake City. The crowd was small but very nice. After the show I went out to the bus to get something and the door slammed behind me. I turned around and realized it was locked. I went to the bus and couldn't remember the code to get back in. I was locked out in the yard of the venue in the snow.  It was pretty cold. I tried to be inconspicuous, but I was wearing  zip-up fleece stripey pajamas! Luckily after 20 minutes or so someone came out...

rumerblog2_4.jpg
The next morning, I woke up to a phone call. "Rumer your album is #1 on iTunes!!!"
"What?" I said, scrambling for the laptop. I remembered the CBS news piece had aired. We had all forgotten about it. There it was. Rumer. Seasons of My Soul. #1 on iTunes and #4 on Amazon.com. There were no physical copies of the CDs available and people were buying imports at $40. Tag, my keyboard player, came into the hotel room in his pajamas.  Then everyone came in. We were amazed, blinking at the screen. Nobody could believe it. At the next show the place was sold out and packed. When I was standing outside the bus, a car screeched up, a lady jumped out, came running up, threw her arms around me and exclaimed "Welcome to America!" Some other people brought a banner, which had large letters written in glitter spelling "We think you're wonderful."

rumerblog2_2.jpgrumerblog2_5.jpg
Everyone wanted to talk about the CBS story. I connected with so many wonderful people. At the Minneapolis show, one lady moved me to tears when she said, "My husband died in April and this is the first time I have gone out by myself. I saw you on the TV, bought a ticket and I came here by myself."

Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" Is Our Music Video of the Day

$

0

Like the rest of the country, we've spent the past week remembering how great Whitney Houston's music is. On the eve of her funeral tomorrow in New Jersey, we therefore can't think of a better video to post for Oldie-But-Goodie Friday than Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody." It's an '80s pop video at its best: synth beats, hand claps, paint-splattered backdrops and giant hair. The fashion in this video is also quintessential '80s, from belted jeans to skin-tight knit dresses, all of which point to pretty much everything you see for sale in American Apparel today. This was one of the first videos we can clearly remember watching on MTV as kids, and, to us, Houston seemed like the prettiest, coolest girl. We pictured her driving around Beverly Hills in a convertible (which obviously had a car phone) and doing other various glamorous things that we associated with style, sophistication and beauty but were probably just indicated by what we saw in perfume commercials for Exclamation Perfume by Coty or some such. Anyway, enjoy.

Hrafnhildur Arnardottir, aka Shoplifter, is, to put it simply, a genius. The Icelandic-born, New York-based artist, who works frequently with Bjork and fashion line VPL, uses hair as her primary medium -- both synthetic and human -- and for this, her first exhibit with Charles Bank Gallery, presents a series of magical hair installations, several of which feature smiley faces. Below, check out some preview images from the show, and be sure to head to the opening tonight at Charles Bank to see it in the flesh/hair.

Simon Doonan, Jonathan Adler + Mr. Mickey Talk 'Paisley Ping-Pong' and Other 'P' Words

Take a break from whatever you're supposed to be doing right now and check out this amazing video of Mr. Mickey interviewing celebrity couple who can never break up, Barneys creative ambassador at large (and author of our new Nicki Minaj cover story) Simon Doonan and interior design guru Jonathan Adler. Watch as Mr. Mickey outs Doonan and Adler, listens to them brag about fake magazines holding photos shoots in their amazing home and chats with them about merchandising. For those of you not in the know, "merchandising" is a retail term for attractively arranging products so people want to buy them. In a more general (and gayer) sense, however, it's the process of arranging items to be as glamorous as possible so that your friends are jealous of your clown pillows and cat dolls when they come over. Take a look at the clip above by Elizabeth Hummer. Pussy.
